Whose Sena?

Blogged in Life by Uty Monday February 1, 2010

Recently, I have been following a multitude of media reports of the Shiv Sena blasting Mumbaikars left right and center for not being Maharashtrians enough.

All of which gives rise to a moot question – who is a Mumbaikar? Is it someone who lives in Mumbai, or is it a so called “Marathi manoos” – an ethnic Maharashtrian living in Mumbai? Having lived in Mumbai myself, I strongly believe it is the former.  It is the people of Mumbai who will define Mumbai, not the Shiv Sena. In any case, Mumbai owes a lot to non-Maharashtrians who have contributed significantly to its growth.

The Shiv Sena promotes itself as a saviour of the Marathi Manoos, but is hell bent on alienating the same Marathi Manoos from the rest of the Indian Diaspora. Maybe the question Sena should be asking itself is “Whose Sena am I?”

Water Wars

Blogged in Life by Uty Thursday December 3, 2009

There is no dearth of predictions and even prophecies that the next war in the world will be for water. Today, one person has died in Mumbai when protesting regular water cuts. The death toll has started on the countdown to the water wars.

The Connected World

Blogged in Life by Uty Thursday November 26, 2009

I have been seeing that increasingly, we can create real mashups and circles online. More and more people are also going online. The Twitter revolution is really amazing, with everyone and their uncle on twitter.

I have been on twitter for the last one year, but only recently became active. I have found the conversations stimulating, the people diverse, yet responsive and a strange sense of belongingness. Have met people who are visible and important, yet ready to talk and exchange ideas. This, I feel, is one thing that can yield enormous benefits to the world.

Soon, I hope, there will be others who will see the potential and online identity has and use the internet as a medium of communication and social change. This can bring about speed and transparency into the daily lives we lead. I am excited to be a part of it

The Great Indian Justice Tamasha

Blogged in Life by Uty Tuesday November 24, 2009

So, the anniversary of 26/11 is upon us. Three days of constant terror, with people counting hours passing by and terrorists holed up in India causing mayhem, killing innocent people and breaking the resolve of the country.

One year on, we have one lone terrorist in custody for those three days of terror. The sole terrorist, who, despite documentary evidence, scores of eye witnesses and pictures and videos in the media, is sitting pretty in prison. He confessed and then has retracted his confession. We have investigated and found connections across the world in India, Pakistan and even the US, and have yet been powerless to bring much needed closure to the people of India What a mockery of the Indian Justice System. And as if this was not enough, now Pakistan wants Kasab back, ostensibly to close its own so called “case” against the co conspirators in Pakistan.

My only fear now is that we will again demonstrate our misplaced faith in Pakistan, a country which has demonstrated time and again it cannot be trusted, and release Kasab to them. I pray for some sense to be instilled in our government, let common sense rule and let us sentence Kasab to what he deserves, death by hanging.

Shame sena, shame

Blogged in Life by Uty Saturday November 21, 2009

Have been watching in absolute disgust the attack on the IBN CBN and IBN Lokmat offices by the Shiv Sena. This shows the height of intolerance and the absolute petty mindedness of the Shiv Sena. To top it all, the Sena mouthpiece Saamna has not only condoned the attack, but they have actually celebrated it by stating that people have welcomed the attack.

Shows how much they are living in cuckoo-land. They cannot get away with it, Maharashtra will not let them get away with it.
